About Joey Chait
Director and Lead Appraiser
From a very early age, Joey was cultured in the world of art and antiques. Beginning at seven years old, he would accompany his father on twice-yearly trips to China in search of new pieces for the family antique shop. Over the years, Joey has traveled to every major country in Asia, and had the privilege of studying with host of international scholars and museum curators.
In January 2000, he began working full time in the family business, and helped expand the family antique shop into a full service auction house in Beverly Hills. In addition to broadening his knowledge of Asian Art, Joey helped catalog thousands of pieces, ran appraisal clinics and evaluation workshops, and co-wrote hundreds of appraisals for his clients.
As the auction house continued to grow, Joey became proficient in cataloging a diverse range of antiques including European and Russian art, Pre-Columbian art, and natural history items such as fossils, meteorites, minerals, and lapidary arts.
In search of change, and with his fathers blessing, Joey left the auction world to go into business for himself. He his now an independent appraiser, and is Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) compliant through October 24th, 2019.
I offer personal property appraisal services for the following purposes:
Fine Art Appraisal & Authentication
We provide professional appraisals for artwork and other items of value, as well as providing objective assistance with art acquisitions. Having your collection of fine and decorative art appraised by Blue Shelf Art Advisory is an easy, confidential, and seamless experience that provides you with an accurate appraisal report tailored to your specific needs.
Insurance Coverage & Loss/Damage
In the event of damage or loss to an art object, we can provide expert valuation for the replacement cost of that property, or the cost to restore and repair the property. Insurance appraisals are very important for full coverage of your valuable items in case of loss or damage. Appraisals are an important part of owning art, and for protecting your art investment. Art values can change quickly and insurance coverage should be current; approximately every two years is advisable, to insure proper coverage in the event of damage or loss.
Appraisals that have the intended use of charitable donation must meet stringent criteria of the Internal Revenue Service. We can provide you an appraisal that adheres to the strict guildines they require. The IRS mandates that any charitable contribution of an item with a fair market value of more than $5,000.00 must have a certified appraisal by a qualified appraiser attached to your tax return.
Legal Disputes & Expert Witness
Appraisals that serve to assist in the division of assets amongst heirs, or in a dissolution of marriage or other partnership, by providing unbiased, objective Fair Market Value appraisals for tangible assets. Should court testimony be required, we provide professional and impartial litigation support and expert witness testimony for mediation and civil matters. All appraisal reports are written to the high standards of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). They are accepted and respected by courts of law, federal and state government agencies.
